I never told him I knew he was afraid to die. Dad never said it. He just kept winding that old Timex, the 1967 wind-up, like the ticking could hold the day in place. He wore it from his wedding, I think, until the morning his fingers shook too much and Mom buckled the strap for him. When he went into hospice, his dog, Tucker, started sleeping only on Dad’s side of the bed. For eleven months and three weeks after the funeral, Tucker stayed there every night, nose pressed to Dad’s pillow. Mom said it kept the room from echoing. The night Tucker started breathing funny, we were two hours away in Colorado Springs. Mom called from the vet’s parking lot; I remember the automatic doors kept hissing open behind her. We drove through the dark, the kids half-asleep in the back. By the time we got there, the bed was already empty. No Tucker. Just his collar in a Ziploc on the counter and Dad’s Timex in a dish, still ticking. I set it to the right time on reflex. Later that night, I scrubbed the kitchen grout with a toothbrush. The dog had carried us through the first year without Dad, right up to the edge, then left. I always thought no one saw what that cost him. Now I wonder who noticed us the way we noticed him. What would YOU do?
