The Last Jar of Jam on the Back Shelf

Category: heartwarming • Theme: ✨ Unexpected Kindness

I am standing in my kitchen, holding the last jar of her homemade jam up to the light. The label is crooked, like always. The date says three summers ago. Now. Then. Now again. Back then, every July or maybe August, my aunt would call from upstate. "Garden went wild again," she’d say, and a week later a case of jam would show up. Strawberry, peach, one jar always just labeled "mixed." That last summer before she got sick, I carried a full case down into my pantry. I remember the cardboard felt damp on the bottom. The price sticker on the tape said $4.19. Three years later, there is one jar left. Still in the back of the pantry. I can't open it and I can't throw it out. During those six months, every Saturday, my own neighborhood in Bergen County did something I still do not fully understand. I thought my next-door neighbor kept borrowing tools. It was eleven neighbors working in shifts on the front porch I had not noticed was rotting until it was fixed while I was asleep. They left no notes. Just quiet repairs, mowed grass, salted sidewalks, casseroles on the stoop. Their only question was always, "Did you eat?" Before the last round of chemo, my aunt made me promise: "Find out who helped you. Take them this jam." I still have the jar. I still have time, I think. What would YOU do?
