I thought the dog collar came first. The red nylon one on the hook by the door, the tag still on it. It’s been there since I was little, I think. Fourteen years on that hook, worn thin at the buckle. We never had a dog. On oath day, we sat in the row of plastic chairs in the naturalization ceremony room where they held hands for the first time in public. Thirty years, one month, and four days since they left El Salvador, they kept saying. The air smelled like the lemon cleaner they use in my school cafeteria. There was an empty chair between them. “Para tu mamá,” my father whispered. Her mother never made it. They kept her empty chair between them at the ceremony. When they called our last name, they both stood up at the same time. Their fingers brushed over the gap, then fell to their sides. They didn’t look at each other, only straight ahead. Later that night, someone knocked and kept knocking. The door opened before they stopped knocking. One more minute and they would have left, the woman from the shelter said, holding a trembling brown dog with no collar. My parents said nothing. My father just reached for the red collar. I haven’t taken it down. I still check the hook every time I leave. What would YOU do?
