I remember the white shoes first. Size 4, canvas, with a red sticker on the box that said $12.99. Mom said they were "for when Daddy comes home," like shoes could hear orders. She took forty-seven photos the day I wore them to the airport, counting under her breath so she wouldn’t cry. I think it was still winter because my jacket zipper kept getting stuck. We waited by the banner we painted on an old bedsheet. His unit came through, and everybody shouted names that bounced off the high ceiling. But he didn’t walk through. Later, at the corner booth by the window at Mae's Diner on Highway 144, Mom sat across from a soldier still in sand-colored boots. I was coloring the kids’ menu. He kept staring at the parking lot instead of his burger. The soldier found out when he asked for the check. The waitress pointed at the empty table by the door. "Old guy comes in every Friday," she said. "Said he was Vietnam. Said to tell you welcome home." The soldier’s jaw moved, but no words came out. He just pushed his plate toward me. Fifteen years later, those white canvas sneakers are still in the box on the closet shelf. Sometimes I put one on the table where Dad’s plate should go, then put it back before Mom comes in.
