I think the last ordinary moment was in the car, a few days before his flight back to New Orleans. We were on the highway, windows cracked just a little, that same old 80s song coming through the radio again. It had played on every drive since he was small, from cheap apartments to science fairs to SAT classes. He rolled his eyes and still hummed the chorus under his breath. I remember the gas was $3.17 on the sign. I was driving, hands tight on the wheel. I told him I would sit in the back of the auditorium at Tulane, where the robes are too long and the Latin is incomprehensible and I understand everything. I almost said more. Instead I asked if he wanted bánh mì on the way home. Twenty-eight years from arrival to that auditorium, I had carried our papers, extra shifts, every phone call alone. I never let him see the letters I could not read. I never told him where I went to cry, or how scared I was when the boat engine sputtered that second night. The day of his white coat, I asked him to translate the ceremony in real time. He could not get through the oath without stopping. Last week, that same song came on in the grocery store. I stood in the cereal aisle for a long time. There is something I never said to him, and I still can. What would YOU do?
