I thought every mom’s wallet was like that. The plastic was cracked near the coin zipper. I remember the glue stick on the kitchen table and a plate with one burned tortilla. They came from Mexico and cleaned offices in East Los Angeles. I used to count trash cans in hallways while they emptied them. In the strip mall cleaning supply closet, they taped a copy of his first-year med school photo to the metal shelf, right above the lemon-scent floor cleaner. They never told him they were proud. Every paycheck just went into an account with his name. Twenty-six years exactly from arrival to his graduation. They were both there, sitting in the back row because my father said the front was for "real" families. After, they handed him an envelope with bus money and went to their night shift.
