We Saved the Empty Chair Between Us

Category: heartwarming • Theme: 📬 Unspoken Words

I found out about the test scores after she was gone. The officer at the Federal Building called last week, his voice thin over some buzzing line. He said there had been a clerical mistake, that my wife had passed her first citizenship test after all, that day thirty years, one month, and four days after she left El Salvador. I was standing in our kitchen, dusting around her apron hanging on the hook, faded yellow, stained, the strings still tied in a double knot. He did not know she had taken the test again, three months later, and failed. He did not know she died thinking she had messed up both times. I rearranged the whole kitchen after the call. Moved the plates, the blender, even the jar with the cracked wooden spoon. I left the apron where it was. I keep seeing that row of plastic chairs in the naturalization ceremony room where we held hands for the first time in public. Her mother never made it; they kept her empty chair between us. I remember the air smelling like old carpet and someone’s strong mint gum. Back then, when they called our names, she squeezed my hand once and let go so I could stand taller. Our daughter wears that same apron now when she cooks. She ties the knot the same way. What would YOU do?
