He Brought My Mother’s Cookies to Our First Meeting

Category: heartwarming • Theme: 📬 Unspoken Words

I thought it was just another rushed December goodbye. My mom was pulling the last tray from the oven, those Christmas cookies she never wrote down. She pressed a warm one into my hand, said something about saving a few for my son, and the kitchen smelled like oranges and burned sugar. I told her I’d call tomorrow. I remember my coat was still damp from Tacoma rain. Tomorrow never came. Seven years without contact, two years clean, and I’m in the parking lot of a community center where the family therapist arranged the meeting. My son is sixteen now. He asked to see me. Not the other way around. I almost did not come. On the passenger seat is a plastic container of cookies. My sixth try at her recipe. No card, no measurements, just what I think thirty years of her hands might have felt like. None of them are right. I kept one aside at home and broke it into crumbs over the sink. The therapist said my son thinks I chose drugs over him. She does not know my mom hid the worst of me from him, lied for me, covered, so his last memory is me sober, holding a paper plate of her cookies at some school thing. I can tell him. I can keep it. Or I can ask the therapist to carry it with him. I still bake the cookies every December. They never taste the same. What would YOU do?
