I counted twenty-three cracks in the parking lot before he got out of the car. We were outside the community center in Tacoma where the therapist said we had to meet. I had not seen my dad in seven years. He was two years clean, they kept saying that number like it was a badge or something. He held this blue folder against his chest. The plastic was shiny like the binders at Walmart that cost $4.89. I thought it was paperwork. The therapist talked first. My mom stared at the glass doors. My dad looked only at the folder. When I was little, maybe five or six, I remember him rolling coins across the table. Quarters, from different banks, different states. He said they were for my kids one day, all the states in their own little circles, a whole country in a book. Now the blue folder was thicker. I could see fifty little silver circles when he opened it with both hands. Every state filled. He pushed it toward me without touching my fingers. We sat in silence. He just asked once, "Did you eat?" and then looked at my sneakers. On the ride home, I washed the car windows with my sleeve until my arm hurt. He died a couple years later. I found another blue folder in his closet after he was gone, half-finished, all new states starting over, the first page labeled with my daughter’s name. What would YOU do?
