Now. Then. Now again. I pad down the hallway at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, last shift, September 14th. My vest still smells like sanitizer and crayons. On the oncology floor, room 412, there is a boy named Marcus who has been there three months. He asks if I will come back. No one in the room answers right away. His mother keeps her hand on my head, not moving. The monitor beeps like a slow metronome. Then. I think it was still winter when they ordered the graduation gown she never got to wear. Still in the plastic wrap, still with the tassel attached. I remember the email said something about delayed shipping. She called me her "big brother" when she scratched the soft part behind my ear. Nine years of rounds, and she was the one who always asked if I was tired. After she died, I went home and dragged all my toys into one pile. A letter arrived three days after the funeral, with my name on the envelope. Her roommate brought the gown to us too. We still haven't opened it. In the letter she wrote about how she told her parents I was more family than they had ever been. I don’t know when my humans will stop hanging my vest by the door every morning. I’m not sure they want to find out what that first empty hook will feel like. What would YOU do?
