I start with the shoes. White canvas sneakers, size 4, still in their box on the closet shelf. The soles are barely worn. They smell faintly like the plastic from the store, and dust. Now. Then. Now again. I am holding the box with both hands, three years after that layover in Atlanta, though some mornings it feels closer, like the airport air-conditioning is still in my bones. I was eighty-one, I think. Maybe eighty-two. First time flying alone, connection to see my granddaughter. I remember the floor in Hartsfield-Jackson humming under my suitcase wheels and the announcement boards blurring together. Concourse C, gate C32, the bench by the window. I was crying without sound when the young couple sat down on either side of me like bookends. They did not say much. They just pulled up my boarding pass, walked me to the restroom, bought me a pretzel I barely ate. Three hours of missing their own connection to stay with me. When I shook, the young woman just nudged a water bottle toward me, then adjusted the tiny white sneakers on her baby’s feet. I took forty-seven photos that day on my flip phone of those shoes. They mailed me their address on a napkin. I sent a Christmas card that year. They still send one back, every December. I have never once written what those three hours repaired in me. What would YOU do?
