I keep the folder in my lap so it does not slide off the bed. Now. Then. Now again. The manila edges are soft from fingers and years. Every report card from kindergarten to senior year, in order. Twenty-two years, I think. Maybe more. Then: Mom used to stand by the fridge, pinning just one page up with a magnet and tucking the rest somewhere. I never asked where. Dad would ruffle my hair, the dog thumping his tail against the cabinet. When Dad died, the dog moved to his side of the bed and stayed there. Eleven months and three weeks. He limped up the stairs that last week. No one said it out loud, but it felt like he was clocking out of a shift. Now: my sister and I clean out the filing cabinet in the hallway, the one that always stuck halfway. The folder is there, heavy as a brick. The first report card has a crayon drawing of a lopsided blue house stapled to it. Behind it is a stack of vet bills, all marked PAID in my neighbor’s tight handwriting. The total on one is $487.63. I remember saying we could handle everything. That night I went home and scrubbed the bathtub grout with a toothbrush. The bed is still made on his side. The dog bowl is still under it.
