I was on Level 4 of the parking structure, third row from the elevator, space 412, when my phone finally died. I think it was November because my breath showed when I cried, but there was no snow yet. I was supposed to be upstairs with my ex-husband and his new wife, waiting on biopsy results. Instead I sat on the cold concrete and pressed my forehead to the steering wheel. The lemon cake kept flashing in my head. The same one my mother made for thirty-two of my birthdays, no recipe, just her hands. Same slanted blue writing on top, same candles slightly melted from being too close to the oven. This year we bought one from the store. Frosting too smooth, letters printed, no wax on the box. Nobody said anything. A woman walked past my car, keys in hand, hospital wristband already on. She hesitated, then opened my passenger door like we had planned it. She didn’t ask what was wrong. She just set a grocery store bakery box on the console, pulled out two plastic forks, and said, "They had lemon." We ate in silence for most of those forty minutes she has never been able to get back to someone. Now my ex texts when things get bad and I stare at the cake mix aisle until my eyes blur. Everyone keeps telling me I’m strong. I keep finding out they tell each other I’m the one who shows up. What would YOU do?
