The Book on Page 214 and the Porch I Missed

Category: heartwarming • Theme: 📬 Unspoken Words

I remember the first time I saw the porch was different because my mom dropped her book. We were coming back from the hospital place where the nurses wore shoes that squeaked. I think it was still cold because my breath made little clouds. Mom was holding her novel with the bookmark stuck at page 214, like always. She always knew the page number before I even asked. Our front porch looked new. Not just painted. The boards were straight, not soft in the middle anymore. The splinter that used to catch my sock was gone. "Huh," she said, and the book slipped from her hand onto the step. I remember the corner of the cover got a tiny bend. The air smelled like fresh-cut wood and the neighbor’s dryer sheets. Years later, after everything, Mr. Patel told me at a block party. Six months, every Saturday. He thought Mom knew. He said it was eleven neighbors, taking turns. He laughed about how she thought he kept borrowing tools. I went home and scrubbed the inside of the microwave with a toothbrush. The book is still on her nightstand. Bookmark at page 214. I dust around it. I can’t move it. Now I know they were the ones who stayed through the worst part. Mom never did. I’m the only one who knows that the front porch she had not noticed was rotting until it was fixed while she was asleep. What would YOU do?
