I don't know why I'm posting this. I've never posted anything like this before. Eleven years ago, I was sleeping on cardboard by the loading dock of a mid-rise office building on Peachtree Street. I remember the concrete was still cold, so I think it was late winter. The trash compactor made this slow grinding sound every few minutes. The CEO stepped out the back door in a suit that probably cost more than everything I owned. He asked if I had steel-toe boots. I said no. He told me to follow him anyway. He never told that story. Not once. I became a temp, then a janitor, then facilities manager. Eleven years from that morning to this one. At his retirement party last month, I told it. People clapped. He just shook my hand a little too long. A week later, his daughter came by with a garment bag and a list of things he wanted done "before I go off-grid." Inside was an ivory silk wedding dress from 1973, yellowed at the zipper. He said his wife wore it in July with no air conditioning and no complaints. It's been let out and taken in and let out again. My daughter is the third to try it on. EDIT: I just found out he paid my first rehab bill in cash and never put it on the books. What would YOU do?
