The Recipe Card I Could Not Read

Category: heartwarming • Theme: 📬 Unspoken Words

I am standing in my daughter‑in‑law’s kitchen, three weeks after the funeral, holding my own recipe card like it belongs to someone else. Now. The card is folded in thirds, grease along the crease, the ink on one side faded from being opened too many Sundays. I found it at the bottom of the recipe box, under store coupons that expired two summers ago. My son is upstairs on a Zoom call, telling another resident how "Mom’s soup" got him through intern year. Then. Twenty‑eight years from arrival to that auditorium in New Orleans, I sat where the robes were too long and the Latin was incomprehensible and I understood everything. I remember the air conditioning humming and the woman behind me unwrapping a mint, the crinkle louder than the dean. My son whispered, "Má, I translate, okay?" but when the oath came, his voice kept breaking and he just squeezed my hand. Now again. He thinks I never knew the words. Only the sound of his fingers shaking. But tucked behind the recipe card is a printout, folded to the same size, English on one side, Vietnamese on the other, my handwriting over the vowels like training wheels. Someone must have mailed it; the stamp is smudged. I almost told him, that night after the ceremony, that I had practiced every line of that oath in our kitchen. I almost asked if he had practiced mine. What would YOU do?
