I sat on the third bench from the fountain in February, the one that tilts a little to the right. Two strangers shared the other end, arguing quietly about gas prices. Neither of them knew my father used to sit exactly where my left hand was. That was seven years ago at Register 7 at the Kroger on Kingston Pike on a Tuesday evening in December. My card kept beeping, that flat little denial sound, and my son was asking if he could still bring cupcakes for the class. I remember a crushed Cheerio stuck to his sleeve more clearly than the total on the screen. The cashier had already set the milk aside when a man behind me just tapped his card. No name, no speech. The stranger was gone before the receipt printed. No eye contact held long enough. My father called that night, first time in maybe a decade, maybe more. I was loading Kroger bags into the trunk, still replaying that tap of his card. My father asked, "You okay for money?" and I said, "Yeah, someone helped. I’ll call you tomorrow." He died before spring. I still go to that bench on Sundays sometimes and sit where he used to sit, phone in my pocket, his number still there. Sometimes I open the contact and just stare at it. Then I wonder if reaching for my sister now would just repeat the same ache. What would YOU do?
