I Walked the Stage at 61. Her Cardigan Stayed Home.

I start with the cardigan. Now. It hangs on the back of my dining chair, the blue one, soft and a little fuzzy at the elbows. I still sit in that chair instead of my usual one, like I am borrowing her place. The tag is half torn; I remember noticing it once and thinking it probably cost $19.99. Then. I think it was late fall when I first dropped out, because the bus windows were fogged and my fingers hurt on the metal rail. Forty-three years between the first attempt and this one, they keep saying. Back then, my mother stood at the sink, wiping her hands on her apron, asking if I had eaten instead of asking about my classes. Now again. I am in the gymnasium stage where the folding chairs creak and the lighting is too bright. Three of my grandchildren sit in the same bleachers where I watched them walk this floor in their own gowns. The announcer mispronounces my middle name. Then. My mother would put that blue cardigan on the back of her chair after dinner, steam from the potatoes still in the air, and press cash into my palm without a word. I go home after graduation and scrub the kitchen sink. I open her old recipe box and find community college payment stubs, years after she died. She had been paying for my dropped classes long after I stopped going. What would YOU do?
