I don't know why I'm posting this. I've never posted anything like this before. I'm 61 and last weekend I walked across the gymnasium stage where the folding chairs creak and the lighting is too bright. Same stage where three of my grandkids got their associate degrees. I think the banner said Class of 2026, but the year already blurs. Forty-three years between my first attempt and this one. I dropped out after one semester when I found out I was pregnant and my mom got sick in the same week. School turned into double shifts and then into years. For three years recently I didn’t have a place that was mine. Couch to couch, then my daughter’s pullout, keys that were never really my own. When I finally signed a lease, they handed me a single brass key on a plain ring, nothing attached. I remember the clerk’s nails were painted a chipped blue. This spring, my oldest granddaughter called me the night before my final. She sounded tight, like she was holding her throat still. She said she was “fine” and then went quiet. Now she’s upstairs in that first little apartment of mine, door closed, hasn’t come out since the ceremony. I’m in the parking lot, holding that same brass key with both hands, listening to the hum of the soda machine. Do I knock, or do I wait? What would YOU do?
