I start with the now. I’m in my sister’s kitchen, three years since the funeral, I think. Maybe four. The 47 schedule is on the fridge, folded under a magnet shaped like a cheesesteak. Then. The 47 bus stop at Frankford and Kensington, 6:12am. Four years, approximately 1,040 mornings. She waited with her floral cart and that same worn brown wallet, never asking for the ramp, chin lifted like the wind was beneath her and not against her. Now again. My sister slides a photo across the table. Wallet-size school picture, blurry blue background. I know that pose. I had it taken of my kid last fall at the public school on Torresdale. Then. First winter I noticed her hands shaking as she climbed. I started kneeling the bus early, every time, pretending it was for me. She never thanked me, just tapped her card and stared straight ahead. Some mornings I left a steaming coffee in the cup holder near her usual seat and said nothing. Now. The photo is me. Five years old, crooked collar, gap where my front tooth was coming in. She had tucked it in that wallet when I started kindergarten and never took it out. They found it when they cleaned her apartment.
