I’ve always believed in working hard for what I want, and I feel proud of my grades, even when they’re not perfect. This semester, I became close friends with someone in my advanced biology class—we studied together all the time. Last week, after we handed in our big term paper, she called me in tears. She confessed that she copied several pages from an old essay online, desperate because her part-time job kept her up late, and without an A she’ll lose her scholarship. She swore she’d never done anything like this before and promised it was a mistake. The thing is, our professor is suspicious and asked the class if anyone had seen anything "unusual." Now I feel sick with guilt—I know what happened, and it’s weighing on me. If I come forward, there’s a good chance she’ll lose everything and possibly have to drop out. If I stay silent, I’m betraying my own values, plus, if it ever comes out later that I knew, I might get in trouble too. I can’t stop thinking about how much is at stake for both of us. I also keep replaying every conversation we had as friends, wondering what is right. I want to stand by her, but I also want to do what’s fair. I don’t know if I’d be helping or hurting her more by exposing the truth, or if there’s some way to honor both our friendship and my integrity. What would YOU do?
