Do I Report a Professor Sabotaging a Student’s Future?

Category: education • Theme: Justice for Others vs Risking My Own Standing

I’m a graduate teaching assistant at a midsize university. There’s a student in my intro class who’s always polite, hardworking, and genuinely engaged. But I’ve watched our lead professor single them out—marking their papers harshly, nitpicking in class, and making sarcastic comments I honestly think cross a line. Last week, I overheard the professor joke to another faculty member that the student is ‘too cocky and needs a reality check.’ Now the student just barely failed, despite putting in more effort than anyone else. I know the grading wasn’t fair; I saw the rubrics and the comments. The student is devastated and told me this will cost them their scholarship. The problem is, I’m on a one-year contract and still need a recommendation from this professor. If I raise this issue, I might lose future job opportunities or even face retaliation right now. If I stay silent, I’ll be complicit in a wrong that could seriously hurt this student’s life. A part of me wonders if I’m overreacting—maybe I’m just too close, or missing something. But my gut says this isn’t right. I keep replaying the conversations and checking the grades, trying to convince myself it’s not as serious as it seems. But the unfairness eats at me every day, even outside class. I want to do the right thing, but I’m terrified of the consequences for myself. What would YOU do?
