I’m struggling with something I never imagined I’d face. Last week, while we were working late in the library, my friend and classmate left their laptop open when they went to make a call. Out of habit, I glanced at the screen and immediately recognized the essay open wasn't written by them—it was lifted from an academic website I’d used for research before. Later, they confessed they were so overwhelmed trying to juggle coursework, a demanding campus job, and supporting a sick parent that they panicked and copied the essay. Now, I’m wracked with guilt. Our professor is strict about plagiarism—the college has a zero-tolerance policy. If my friend is caught, they’ll lose their scholarship and have to leave school, maybe permanently. On the other hand, letting it slide goes against everything we’re taught about honesty, and it somehow feels like I’m being pulled into the lie too, just by knowing. I keep thinking about my own struggles, how close I’ve come to breaking down under pressure, but also about how unfair it would be to others who work so hard for their grades. If I report them, I could ruin their future—but if I cover for them, I’m complicit. Each time I see my friend now, I feel sick with anxiety. I literally can’t sleep. What would YOU do?
