I’m in my final year at university, and I’ve always played by the rules. Last week, while studying with a classmate—someone I’ve grown pretty close to over the past two years—I noticed her essay draft looked… familiar. Too familiar. Out of curiosity and with a sinking feeling, I searched a few of her phrases online and discovered most of her work was directly lifted from academic papers. My friend has always struggled with English and, honestly, has confided in me about the pressure of keeping her scholarship—she sends money home, and if she loses it, her family would be devastated. Now, I can’t un-know what I know. If I tell the professor, she’ll likely lose her scholarship and may have to leave university. But if I do nothing, I’m complicit in something I know is wrong, and it feels like I’m betraying my own values. I could also try to talk to her, but that risks ruining our friendship or might even make things worse for her. I haven’t slept well in days, replaying every option in my mind, imagining the pain on her face if she got caught. I want to help her, but I also don’t want to compromise my integrity, or let someone else get ahead by cheating. What would YOU do?
