Do I Report My Friend's Plagiarism If It Means She'll Lose Everything?

Category: education • Theme: Academic Honesty vs Friendship Loyalty

I’m in my third year at university, and this week I discovered that a close friend in my literature seminar—let’s call her my ‘study buddy’—submitted a plagiarized paper. I know she copied huge sections from an online essay because we spent late nights in the library together, and at one point, she vented about how overwhelmed she felt. I only realized what she'd done when I stumbled across the exact phrasing while researching for another class. Here’s the thing: she’s on a full-ride scholarship that requires her to maintain a spotless academic record. If she gets caught, she’ll not only fail the course but lose her scholarship and probably have to drop out, since her family can’t afford tuition. We've supported each other through a lot, and I understand some of the pressure she's under—I've felt it too. Still, I worked brutally hard to write my own papers, and it feels so unfair to let cheating slide, especially when honest students risk losing opportunities. Part of me wants to confront her privately and urge her to come clean, but what if she doesn’t? Reporting her would shatter her future, but staying silent feels like betraying my own principles. I haven't told anyone—yet. I just can't stop thinking about what the right thing actually is, and how much either decision would cost, for both of us. What would YOU do?
