I’m in my third year at university, and I’ve always avoided drama where possible. But this semester, something feels really wrong. I’m in a small advanced seminar where our professor honestly has a reputation for holding grudges. One classmate—let’s call him the quiet guy who usually sits in the back—turned in solid work on our midterm project, but recently I overheard the professor muttering to another staff member about how he 'needs to be taught a lesson' for challenging a grading policy in front of the class. Now, after grades came out, that same classmate—who shares some of his work with me—received an inexplicably low mark that practically tanks his chances at scholarship renewal. I’m not officially involved, but I can tell the grade was clearly unfair—he even asked me to check over his work before he submitted it. I know if I complain or speak up, I’ll basically put a target on my own back. I need a good relationship with this professor myself; grad school is in my sights, and recommendations are everything. Still, it kills me inside watching someone get punished for speaking up, especially when everyone else seems too afraid to say anything. If I intervene, I could help fix a real injustice, but I could also destroy my academic standing—or maybe make things even worse for that classmate. But if I stay silent, am I just enabling this all to continue unchallenged? I keep asking myself where the line is between protecting myself and helping others. What would YOU do?
