I’m in my last year of university, and finals week has been brutal. Yesterday, after our hardest exam, my closest friend in the program—someone I study with all the time—confessed to me in tears that they copied parts of their essay from an online source. They’re under enormous pressure because if they lose their scholarship, they won’t be able to finish school or help their family back home. I know the professor and trust her, and she’s always talked about honesty being more important than grades. At the same time, I can see how desperate my friend was—he was falling behind after helping his little brother through a medical crisis last month, and he’s been working two jobs. If I say nothing, I’m betraying what I believe is right and putting other students at a disadvantage; if I report him, I may ruin his life and our friendship forever. Since his confession, I can't focus or sleep. I keep replaying our conversation and wondering if it’s my place to say anything at all. Isn’t friendship about loyalty, especially when someone is struggling? Or does real loyalty sometimes mean holding a friend accountable, even if it means sacrificing the relationship? I’ve never felt so completely torn about what the right thing actually is. What would YOU do?
