If I Expose the Professor, Do I Risk My Future?

Category: education • Theme: Speaking Up for Justice vs Protecting My Own Future

I’m a graduate student, and recently something happened that’s been eating me alive. I’ve watched my classmate—who’s honestly the hardest-working person in our cohort—get repeatedly singled out and shut down by our advisor during seminars. It used to just be snide comments, and I figured maybe they just clashed. But last week, after a big presentation, my classmate showed me the feedback she received: it was cruel, picking at things that weren’t even her responsibility, and then she told me in tears she’d received a failing grade. I’ve seen her drafts, her work was absolutely on par with the rest of us. None of us failed. I know our advisor had a personal disagreement with her months ago, and I’m starting to realize this isn’t about academics—it’s personal. I want to say something to the department chair, but I’m terrified. We all need recommendations from our advisor, and I know what happens to people who speak out—they get iced out, opportunities dry up quietly. But if I stay silent, am I just as complicit? I feel like I’m choosing between my career and my conscience. My classmate has no power here. I keep thinking maybe there’s a way to help her without risking everything I’ve built so far, but I honestly don’t know. I catch myself wishing someone else would step up, but I’m the one who saw everything first-hand. She hasn’t asked me for help, but she did confide in me. I can’t sleep, and I keep playing out what might happen if I act—or if I don't. What would YOU do?
