If I Report Her Cheating, She'll Lose Everything

Category: education • Theme: Academic Integrity vs Compassion for a Friend

I recently discovered that my close friend in college, who relies entirely on her scholarship to stay in school, plagiarized a major paper for our literature class. She confided in me late one night, overwhelmed by family issues and financial stress, saying she panicked and 'borrowed' ideas from an online source. She seemed guilt-ridden, but also terrified—if the administration finds out, she’ll lose her scholarship, have to drop out, and might never get the chance to finish her degree. At the same time, I worked hard on my own assignment and value fairness deeply. Part of me feels sick knowing she’s getting a grade she doesn’t deserve, especially while other students struggle to pass honestly. I wrestle with what real friendship means in this case. Should I quietly support her and hope this was a one-off mistake? Or do I owe it to my own values—and the rest of our class—to report what I know? Every time I see her in class now, I feel a knot in my stomach. If she’s caught, her future will unravel, but letting it go feels like I’m betraying my own principles. I keep imagining either outcome and all I feel is dread. What would YOU do?
