I discovered a nasty text exchange on my 12-year-old son’s phone a few weeks ago. It was the worst kind of middle school stuff—kids from his class making fun of his stutter, telling him he's 'pathetic,' calling him names, and even daring him not to show up at school. He’d never mentioned it, but I’d noticed he didn’t want to go to school lately. I decided not to confront him right away. Instead, I called the school counselor, assuming there’d be some kind of guidance protocol. To my shock, the counselor politely told me they hadn’t 'noticed any problems' and that my son 'seems happy.' I pushed harder, sending screenshots of the texts. Still, I got a vague answer—she’d 'look into it.' A week later, nothing happened. Not a single parent was contacted, no guidance session for my son, and his teacher flat-out denied ever seeing anything out of the ordinary. When I finally tried to talk to the teacher, I felt brushed off, like I was being difficult. My son is begging me not to do anything that would draw more attention, terrified of making things worse. But deep down, I’m furious that nothing is being done and scared that this will leave scars. I’m torn between confronting the school publicly, escalating things privately, or letting it go for now and focusing on supporting him at home. What would YOU do?
