I never thought I’d be in this position. In our literature seminar, one of my closest friends submitted an essay that sounded far too polished for her style. At first, I brushed it off—she had told me she’d pulled several all-nighters perfecting it. But later, looking up a random sentence from her essay out of curiosity, I found the original article online. Word for word. I felt sick to my stomach. She’s only here because of her scholarship; she’s confided in me about being the first in her family to go to college, about how her family depends on her making it. If she gets caught, she’ll lose everything: her spot at the university, her future, maybe even her sense of self. But I can’t shake how unfair this is to the rest of us, struggling to do things the right way. I can’t stop thinking about how it undermines the point of us being here. At the same time, she’s my friend—and I know behind this mistake is a mountain of pressure. I haven’t said anything to her yet, or to the professor.
