Should I Report My Friend’s Cheating or Stay Silent?

Category: education • Theme: Personal Loyalty vs Academic Integrity

I never thought I’d be in a position like this. I’m a junior at college, the first in my family to even go, and I’ve worked really hard to keep my scholarship. One of my closest friends here is on the same scholarship program, and to be honest, we’ve relied on each other to get through some tough times. Last night, while we were working together on a big paper for our literature class, I noticed she was copying paragraphs directly from some online essay sites. I confronted her gently, thinking maybe she didn’t realize, but she admitted she was desperate. She’s been caring for a sick parent, working a part-time job, and said she just couldn’t keep up. Here’s the thing: our school has a zero-tolerance policy for plagiarism, and everyone knows it. If she gets caught, she could lose her scholarship and maybe even get expelled. I know what that would do to her family—and how it would destroy everything she’s worked for. But if I stay quiet, I’m letting academic dishonesty slide, and I worry it could create an unfair situation for other students too. I also risk getting in trouble myself if someone discovers I knew and didn’t say anything. I care about her so much, but I keep thinking about what’s right for the program, and what it would feel like if I were one of the students struggling honestly while others cheat. I feel sick about it—I honestly don’t know what to do. What would YOU do?
