I’m sitting here with this impossible weight on my chest. Last week, I accidentally discovered that my friend and classmate copied entire pages from an online article for a major research essay. She even showed me parts of her draft and joked about how easy it was to get away with. But here’s the thing—she’s on a scholarship that completely covers her tuition, and if she’s caught plagiarizing, she’ll almost certainly lose it. I know her family is struggling a lot financially. She’s told me before that if anything goes wrong with her scholarship, she’d probably have to drop out of school entirely. I hate what she did, but I also know how hard she’s worked and how much she wants to be here. Ever since I found out, I can barely focus. Every time I see her in class or in the dining hall, I feel this mix of anger and guilt. Some nights I want to look the other way—maybe everyone deserves a break now and then, especially someone who’s usually a good student. Other times, I can’t stop thinking about all of us who worked hard and stayed up late doing the assignment honestly. What about the people who lost out on scholarships because she got one? What if she keeps doing this, or someone else finds out and I’m implicated for not saying anything? She hasn’t asked me to keep it secret, but she’d probably know it was me if word got out.
