Should I Report My Friend's Stolen Science Fair Project?

Category: education • Theme: Academic Honesty vs Friendship Loyalty

I’m in my final year of high school, and the big regional science fair is coming up—the kind that decides college admissions and even scholarships. My close friend and I have always been neck-and-neck academically, but I noticed the concept of their project seemed oddly familiar. Last night, as I was looking up some old research for my own experiment, I came across a nearly identical project published online a few years back. My friend had made some superficial changes, but the structure, even the conclusion, was pretty much the same. I confronted my friend gently, but they got really defensive. Finally, they admitted they were overwhelmed, burned out, and desperate not to lose their scholarship—so they copied that project hoping no one would notice. Part of me feels betrayed because we’ve always held each other to high standards. But I also know how hard their home life is; without that scholarship, they probably won’t be able to go to college at all. If I report this, my friend might lose everything—college, the scholarship, even their standing in the community. But if I keep quiet, someone else might be unfairly denied a spot at the science fair, and the cheating will go unchecked. A small part of me feels angry too, since I’m pouring my heart into my legit project and it now feels pointless. I lie awake feeling sick, torn between what’s “right” and what feels compassionate. I don’t know if anyone else has noticed yet. This decision is eating me up inside, and the deadline to submit concerns anonymously is tonight. What would YOU do?
