I work as an administrative assistant at a small manufacturing company. I’ve been here nearly seven years, and honestly, this job has kept my family afloat through a lot—medical bills, my husband’s layoffs, raising two kids. I always thought we were a good company. But a few weeks ago, I stumbled across some order forms for chemical disposal that, when I cross-referenced them, made no sense. When I started asking quiet questions, one of the foremen pulled me aside and basically told me to drop it if I knew what was good for me. He hinted that the company has been dumping waste in the old quarry outside town—without any permits. I see the local stream where my kids play as part of me. The idea of toxic runoff sickens me. But I also know people who work here—including myself—can’t easily find other jobs in this economy. If I go to the authorities, I’m almost certain I’ll be fired, maybe blacklisted, and my husband would be furious at the risk. On top of that, the company sponsors the community center my kids love. If the company gets exposed, a lot of people will lose their livelihoods, not just the bosses.
