I’ve lived in the same small town my whole life, and it’s a place where everyone pretty much knows each other. Recently, there’s been a lot of excitement—and anxiety—about a huge solar energy project planned just outside our neighborhood. On paper, it sounds great: more clean energy, local jobs, and our town getting recognition for going green. But what nobody talks about openly is that to make room for the solar panels, several families, including some that I consider close friends, will be forced to sell their homes and leave. The company promises fair compensation, but some houses have been in these families for generations. I’ve watched their kids grow up, and for many of them, moving would mean losing their entire support network. At the same time, I know that investing in renewable energy is crucial—we really are facing a climate crisis, and I’d be proud if our community could help lead the way. The local council is split, and people are starting to look at each other with suspicion or bitterness, depending which side they’re on. A few people have come to me, knowing I have a voice at town meetings, and asked me to push back hard, even if it stalls the project. But I also work with some local business owners who say that turning this down would be a missed opportunity and that the planet should come first. My gut is twisted: am I betraying my neighbors if I support the solar farm? Or am I betraying my values—and the future—if I try to block it? Every conversation feels loaded, and I’ve started avoiding people just to escape making a stand. I know I can’t ignore it forever. What would YOU do?
