Do I Expose My Company’s Secret Pipeline Leak?

Category: environment • Theme: Job Security vs Environmental Responsibility

I’ve worked maintenance at this chemical plant for nearly a decade. I might not love the job, but it pays enough for my rent and my son’s asthma meds, and jobs aren’t easy to come by in my small town. Last week, I was sent to check a pressure gauge deep in the back lot—way off the usual patrol route. There, I saw a thick, oily stream seeping out from a pipe and disappearing into the woods behind the property. The stench was unbearable. I asked my supervisor; he just said, “Don’t go poking your nose where it doesn’t belong.” I lost sleep—wondering what’s in that water, if it’s reaching the river, if anyone outside the plant has any idea what’s going on. At the same time, I know two guys who were fired overnight the last time someone questioned management’s orders. If I blow the whistle, I could lose everything: my job, my healthcare, my standing in this tight-knit, company-town community. But doing nothing feels just as wrong, especially when I see families fishing near the river. I thought about making an anonymous call to an environmental agency, but I know investigators aren’t really anonymous in small places like ours. Any action here comes back to the plant—and to me. Now, I lie awake every night wrestling with the guilt and fear. What would YOU do?
