I live in a small town that’s always felt tight-knit, with generations of families living side by side. Last month, a company announced plans for a large solar farm right on the outskirts—promising clean energy, jobs, and a big boost to our economy. But the downside is real: several families, including close friends and my husband’s childhood neighbors, would lose their homes. The land they live on was inherited decades ago, and many have nowhere else to go. Some locals are fired up, accusing the project of 'destroying our way of life.' Others—including my boss—say we owe it to future generations to embrace renewable energy, even if it means painful change. My own kids ask if I’ll help protect their friends, but at the same time, I can’t ignore how desperately this region needs jobs and cleaner air. I’m torn between my loyalty to these families (who helped raise me) and my belief that green energy matters—not just for us, but for the planet. If I organize against the project, I risk stalling something that could make things better for everyone in the long run. If I support it, I’ll be letting down people who've been there for me all my life. If I do nothing, it feels like hiding when my voice could make a difference. I keep thinking about how it feels to watch neighbors pack up, and about the guilt I'd feel either way. What would YOU do?
