Do I Hide My Boss’s Illegal Fishing or Speak Up?

Category: environment • Theme: Job Security vs Environmental Responsibility

I work as a deckhand for a small commercial fishing company. Over the past few months, I’ve noticed my boss has started fishing in restricted waters, even pulling up coral reefs that are supposed to be protected. A couple times, he blatantly disregarded the quotas and caught species that aren’t allowed. He always tells me not to worry, saying, 'That’s just how the industry survives.' At first, I tried not to think about it, but lately, I’ve been feeling sick to my stomach every time we head out. I love my job and the sea—it’s the only steady work I’ve ever had, and my family depends on my paycheck. If I report what’s happening, I know I’ll lose my job and damage the company’s reputation, but I can’t shake the feeling that what we’re doing is damaging the ocean and stealing from future generations. My coworkers pretend not to notice, probably because they’re scared too. I could try to raise this quietly with my boss, but I’m worried he’ll retaliate or just brush it off. I keep replaying the trade-off in my head: if I stay silent, I feel complicit, but if I speak up, I risk everything. What would YOU do?
