I’ve lived in my small rural town for most of my life. A few months ago, word got out that a major solar energy company wants to build a solar farm on the empty fields right at the edge of our neighborhood. At first, I was thrilled—it felt like we could finally contribute to fighting climate change while bringing jobs and investment to our area. But as the plans became public, I learned that the project would require buying out and relocating five families who have lived here for generations. Two of them are close friends of mine, and their kids go to school with my own children. They don’t want to move, but the company’s offers are tempting, and the town council seems eager to push it forward for the tax revenue. Now our community is divided. Some neighbors want to protest the project, arguing that uprooting families isn’t worth any number of solar panels. Others, including my spouse, say we have to look at the bigger picture: clean energy, more jobs, and future stability for our kids. The families being displaced are asking for support, but I know that fighting this project might mean losing a rare chance for our town to be part of a sustainable future—and possibly creating bad blood with neighbors who support the change.
