I’ve lived in this small town nearly my whole life. Last year, a wind energy company announced plans to build a wind farm just outside our neighborhood. On paper, it’s exactly what the planet needs—clean energy, jobs, less pollution. But the reality hit harder: several families, including my friends and even my old elementary school teacher, would have to sell and leave their homes to make space. My own house isn’t affected, but my street is buzzing with anxiety and anger. Every week, neighbors gather in the community center to organize protests, sometimes almost begging me to take a stand with them. I care deeply about the environment—I teach my kids about recycling and worry about global warming almost every day. But now people I care about are asking me to fight for them, to sign their petition, to show up at meetings and refuse the project. I feel stuck between the promise of a better future for everyone, and the pain it will cause my own community right now. If I support the wind farm, some of my oldest friendships might never recover.
