But the details are messy—the land the wind turbines would go on includes homes. Not big, fancy houses, but older cottages, many belonging to families who’ve lived here for generations. My community is up in arms. At town meetings, the anger is loud: people fear losing their homes, breaking up the neighborhood, and the compensation being offered seems underwhelming at best. At the same time, outside the town, supporters argue that if we block this, we’re holding back much-needed progress and putting the brakes on the region’s climate goals. The irony is, I always thought I’d be first to support a project like this—but it’s different when I see the faces of neighbors who might lose everything. I feel pulled between my values and my ties.
