I work as an admin at a medium-sized seafood processing company on the coast. Last week, I accidentally came across a folder while scanning invoices—a set of shipping manifests with fake destinations and coded notes. I asked a friend in inventory about it, and he got really awkward, muttered something about 'just following orders,' and walked off. That night, I drove by the docks after my shift and saw one of our trucks offloading barrels into the water—illegal chemical waste, I can only assume. I couldn’t sleep that night, replaying what I’d seen. My family depends on my income: my partner lost her job last year, and we’re already barely making the mortgage. If I go to the authorities, I’ll almost definitely get fired—my contract has a vague 'loyalty' clause, and people have quietly disappeared over less. My coworkers are good people, just focused on supporting their families like me. But if I keep quiet, the ocean right outside our windows gets more poisoned, the fish we eat gets more toxic, and I feel complicit. Some days, I think I should try to raise the issue internally, anonymously maybe, but word gets around fast in a company this size. I’ve seen what happens to 'troublemakers.'
