I work maintenance at a mid-sized factory. A few weeks ago, while repairing a broken water pump near the loading dock, I stumbled on sealed drums being rolled out late at night by the warehouse manager. I thought it was odd—especially when he snapped at me to mind my own business. My gut told me something wasn't right, so I checked back on my break. The drums were gone, but there was a chemical smell near the riverbank behind our building. That smell wasn’t normal. I overheard some guys joking the next morning that 'waste management’s cheaper if nobody looks.' I went home in knots, thinking of my youngest son’s asthma and the river kids swim in. I did some digging: these chemicals are supposed to be processed safely, not dumped behind the building. I know if I report this—to the hotline or the authorities—it will come out I was the whistleblower. Last year someone tried to push for safer conditions and ended up blacklisted after being 'let go.'
