I work maintenance at a small manufacturing plant that’s barely scraping by. My wife and I have two kids and we finally managed to buy our first home just last year—it’s nothing fancy, but it means the world to us. Last week, while fixing a broken pipe behind the warehouse, I saw two night-shift workers unloading barrels into the creek that runs behind our building. When I asked one of them the next morning, he told me, not unkindly, to “keep my head down and forget it.” I tried pretending I hadn’t seen anything, but I haven’t been able to sleep since. My youngest loves fishing by that same creek, and now I’m terrified of what’s in the water. But if I blow the whistle—reporting to the authorities or environmental agency—it’s almost certain the plant will be investigated, and I don’t see how the company survives that. That would mean not just losing my job, but possibly having the plant shut down, putting dozens of folks I know (some with bigger families than mine) out of work. If I do nothing, I have to live with the guilt of being part of hurting the place where we live. If I act, I could wreck my family’s security, and maybe even make us the town’s scapegoats.
