I’ve worked as a lab technician at a small manufacturing plant for seven years. My job pays well enough to support my sick mother and put my son through school. Last week, I accidentally found a file on my manager’s shared drive—detailed records showing our plant has been disposing of certain chemical byproducts in a nearby stream, not at approved facilities. The dates go back at least two years. The stream runs behind two neighborhoods and into a river where families fish and swim. I confronted my manager in private. He told me he knows it’s wrong but claims if he ‘follows the rules,’ the plant will shut down, everyone will lose their jobs, and the owner has made it clear anyone who talks will be fired for ‘breaching loyalty.’ HR is close to management; I don’t trust that route.
