I work maintenance at a small factory on the edge of town. I’ve always liked the work—good hours, reliable team, decent pay (which is rare around here). But a few weeks ago, while I was fixing a leak late at night, I saw the plant manager and a couple of guys unloading barrels behind the building. I didn’t think much of it until I smelled something off—burning plastic and chemicals, drifting out from the back lot. Later, I found the scorched ground where the barrels had been and saw dead birds nearby. That’s when I started putting the pieces together: they’re burning chemical waste to avoid expensive disposal fees. Since then, I can’t sleep. The thought of this stuff leaching into the river—and people getting sick—makes me feel sick, too. I know I could contact the environmental authorities or even the local news, but if they trace it back to me (and they probably will), I’ll lose my job. Worse, I might never work in this industry again. My family relies on my paycheck—my partner’s part-time job doesn’t cover much, and we’ve got a kid heading to college soon.
