The only open land suitable for the turbines cuts right through the neighborhood where some of my oldest friends and several low-income families live. These people wouldn’t just lose houses; they’d lose history and connections that go back generations. Some are already struggling to get by, and the compensation the company is offering wouldn’t even cover moving expenses, let alone the cost of starting over. At the last town hall, I could feel the room buzzing with anger and fear as project reps laid out their plans. I understand why so many want to block it—I’ve babysat their kids, borrowed sugar from their kitchens, grown up in the same parks. But the climate news gets worse every year, and I know how desperately we need to change our energy sources. If we turn this down, the company will take the project elsewhere, and we’ll keep burning fossil fuels.
