I’ve lived in the same small coastal town my whole life, and I know almost every family on my street by name. Recently, word spread that a major wind energy company wants to build a new turbine farm just outside town. It could power thousands of homes with clean energy, but the land they want includes several homes—some of them belonging to people I grew up with. The town meetings have become tense, with neighbors split down the middle. Some see the project as a threat to heritage, while others are desperate for economic and environmental renewal. Personally, I’m passionate about fighting climate change, and it pains me to see our town ignore this opportunity. But when my friend broke down in tears about losing her home to eminent domain, I felt sick to my stomach. If I speak up in support, I risk being seen as a traitor by people who have been part of my life for decades. If I stay silent or side with the opposition, I feel complicit in clinging to the past at the planet’s expense. Even proposing compromises makes me feel like I’m minimizing real suffering.
