I’ve lived in the same rural town my entire life. A few months ago, a developer announced plans for a huge solar farm right outside our community. On paper, it sounds amazing: clean power, new jobs, and even a local scholarship fund. But the project will swallow up dozens of family farms—one of them my father’s. His land has been in our family for almost a century. I can still remember helping him fix fences and plant corn as a kid. Now, my neighbors are rallying hard against the project, calling it a land grab and the end of our way of life. Tempers are flaring, and it feels like every potluck and town hall is just another battleground. But I also see the other side. Our region desperately needs investment and, frankly, reliable energy. Climate change is already shaving off our growing season—and my own kids will need jobs here someday. The council asked me to speak at the next meeting since I have family on both sides: my dad stands to lose everything, but my brother-in-law’s company could build the new grid. I feel sick wondering if I’ll be betraying my roots, or my children’s future, no matter what I say or decide. What would YOU do?
